Altinkum, the Surrounding Area, Turkey and the Aegean

Altinkum / Didim Area

Altinkum means "golden sands" and it is for its 3 beautiful, sandy beaches that the resort is best known. It is surely one of the best holiday destinations in Turkey for British people. This small holiday resort is on the south of the Aegean coast. In this part of Turkey you will get 225 days of sunshine throughout the year. It is well known throughout the region for its beautiful sandy beaches and bustling beach front full of restaurants, bar and nightclubs for all the family.

Altinkum is also a superb base for beach lovers looking to achieve the perfect tan. A dip in the clear waters of the Aegean provides the ultimate way to cool off whilst for the more energetic a variety of water sports are available.

Altinkum is a quiet resort by day but comes to life in the evenings with many wonderful restaurants and bars. Some have special Turkish evenings which include belly dancing. For the more lively there are clubs for dancing, the best of which is the Medusa open air coliseum which plays disco music to the early hours. The local market sells leather goods, clothes, lace and home grown produce at very reasonable rates. The marina offers a good selection of boat trips to local coves and beaches. Ferries also run to Bodrum in season. Bodrum is a very old town with a castle, marina and endless shopping arcades.

Altinkum life centres around Dolphin Square, with its myriad of shops, pavement cafes and restaurants. Stroll to the end of Dolphin Square and you are faced with the stunning golden sands of Altinkum's main beach and the rich blue hues of the Aegean Sea. A right turn will lead down one side of the promenade, proffering more restaurants, bars and nightspots. Altinkum beaches do not stop there. Altinkum can boast of many such beaches along its coastline. At the end of the road there is a small secluded beach that has a restaurant. Third beach is the closest large beach to our apartment where you can relax on its golden sand, swim in the clear waters of the Aegean Sea or enjoy the water sport activities along the beach.

The sea shelves gently and is perfect for non-swimmers and small children. Popular for years with British holiday makers who return to the resort year after year, the pace is very laid back; the style relaxed and very friendly. Bars and restaurants line the beach front where in the evening the tempo is more upbeat and holiday makers are entertained by belly-dancers and waiters performing rap dances - some of them extremely well!. The large, open-air 'Medusa' Club is a particular favourite with disco lovers and is within walking distance of the apartment. A dolmus (local bus) ride away Altinkum has its own brand new Aqua Park.

Culture seekers could not find a better base than Altinkum. For those wanting more than just a beach holiday, a large selection of excursions and boat trips can be booked locally. Only 4 kms away is the famous temple of Apollo. The single most impressive site on the Ionian Coast. Particularly fascinating is the trip to Ephesus - one of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World. The Five Islands Boat Trip is another firm favourite.

Didim is the main town associated with Altinkum. It is particularly famous for its Saturday market and ancient Didyma, site of the Apollo Temple, which was first built around 560 B.C. Apollo was the son of Zeus and twin brother to Artemis. According to the legend their mother Leto, gave birth to the twins in the Ortego woods. The word 'Didymaion'.
